Asanas are yoga positions, right?
Meditite is always shown doing the asana known as "the Lotus Position", right?
So its head looks like an unblossomed lotus, referencing both the yoga position (and indirectly its name) as well as the fact that it's still an aprentice.
Apropiately enough, Mega Medicham later on wears a turban that reselmbles a blossomed white lotus.
