It's pretty obvious what happened with crossgens; they churned out way too many of them in Gen iV. I think it's something GF regrets.
Every Gen since, they've come up with something in liue of crossgens. Gen V had the gimmick of not having any old Pokémon; Vi had Mega Evolution, and Vii had regional variants.
It's been a decade since Diamond and Pearl came out. I think it's been long enough that GF feels comfortable with doing crossgens once more. It'll be either this gen or next.
