As for the Thread question I feel like if I was a Gym leader i would have to purposely nerf myself to allow trainers to get past me and obtain a gym badge. I use just the same handful of mons, even if they're the same type, eventually they would just get too strong and I'd have to put them in the backburner and train up fresh battlers to make it "fair" and that sounds like a pain...
