Taking a test run at mono bug in bb2 redux, to see how much overleveling is needed to reliably muddle through. To make up for routes and gift pokemon I cant use I allow additional captures on routes with bugs, and will be using a modified species clause: I can pass up duplicates until I have every bug available in an area, and then I take the bugs as they come.
For Cheren only four bugs are available: kricketot, ledyba, venonat, and sewaddle. kricketot is the best of the bunch because he evolves at 10 to kricketune which is the strongest mon available without massive overleveling. Ledyba is almost decent with mach punch if she gets iron fist as her ability. Venonat learns acid spray at lvl 14 which is good for debuffing cherens munchlax. Sweaddle is the least valuable player.
I catch venonat, kricketot, and ledyba on route 19, sewaddle on route 20, and two additional captures on route 19 yield another two kricketots. The best possible outcome, which makes me want to try and beat Cheren without any overleveling.
Before Cheren the only real fight is the magma grunt. Took two tries to beat him without losses. I lead with two kricketunes and use mud slap and struggle bug on the growlithe to neuter his incinerate, and focus down the axew and joltik as they come out. Mienfoo is saved for last, being the least dangerous as long as I dont hit him to amp up payback.
I make it to Cheren with everyone at just lvl 14. My general strategy:
>lead with a kricketune with soundproof, not technician, to beat porygon with struggle bug. Kricketune wins but takes damage to die to a hit from doduo.
>Doduo comes out next, and I bring in sweaddle to eat the aerial ace and die, then send out my very fast kricketune that outspeeds doduo.
>This kricketune survives one aerial ace and 2hkos with uproar. if doduo uses aerial ace kricketune survives, if doduo uses work up kricketune takes no damage.
