I definitely didn't want them removed, but I also just didn't really feel much of anything for them either playing a game without them.
Sure, I definitely felt more of a sense of achievement after a heavy leveling session in the grass or a few hours spent running around in a circle on a bike/ridemon, but I can't say I at any time felt like I was doing anything more difficult or challenging than just waiting around for a long time, or that I actually enjoyed it beyond what I got at the very end. I have absolutely no fucking idea what compelled them to remove held items or abilities either, but I never truly needed them to play the game.
I guess the last two generations have just conditioned me to expect very little of new titles to the point that it's impossible to really feel angry or insulted by this. It's almost exactly what I expected, if anything I got even more out of it with followers returning.
