I've always kinda hated the real life country associations.
Maybe it's just because I'm less familiar with Japan or those games hyperfocused on specific parts of Japan rather than trying to do the whole thing, but it really feels like a lot of Pokemon's world building is now just "it's a real world thing, but with Pokemon" rather than letting regions have their own identity.
