I get why since he didn't feel like a rival, but lets face it and say X/Y easily trumps on that. What I liked about the guy was that he had a different set goal to "I wanna get stronger just because" in he wanted to do something about team plasma cause they did him wrong, most other rivals didn't do shit when an enemy organisation was attacking their region save for like Barry who was second most notable. He knew you wanted to beat the league and obviously you knew he wanted to beat plasma to get what was his, your relationship was 'i'll scratch your back if you scratch mine' and when you battled each other, felt more like training than battling to see whos the top dog. Also unlike the other friendly 'rivals', he wasn't a pussy who cowered to people.
