Plus, it's not like romance couldn't work. They pretty much did the same thing with Gundam Build Fighters, which was obviously more toy commercial time than Pokemon. They still managed to make a nice romance sub-plot involving the main guy and girl over the course of 25 episodes. I'm sure with 110+ episodes they'll make something work.
