Granted, gen 6 kickstarted it, but it was mostly considered playful nods towards the start of the franchise, and Megas were the new hotness that would hopefully (I shouldn't have to iterate on why that hope has since dried up) lead to more catering of 'mons in the future.
Then gen 7 happened, and it was KantoKantoKanto everywhere you looked. Again, people remained optimistic, but the fire had been ignited at that point.
Gen 8? It went into full tilt. With the upending of Megas, using the new hotness Gigantimaxing, and how Gen 1 got the Gigant forms (though exclusively Charizard at first) it left everyone bitter.
I shouldn't have to detail how people are going to react if this shit happens again in Gen 9. I know I'm well past my breaking point, having entirely skipped buying anything Gen 9 related, but I just want to see where the fuck Masuda is going with it.
