It’s complicated.
Ohmori may be the most ”different” director in the series so far. His games all have some spin on the formula, like the Alola Island challenge, or the Galar Stadiums or Paldea’s open world exploration. He feels like a storyteller at heart, with some new ideas for how Pokémon can be enjoyed. But none of his games are truly finished. We’ve heard about him having to make the Trials by himself, or how the Wild Area was a last minute addition (a response to Let’s Go, which itself was nothing but a response to Go’s success), and SV continues to be a disaster with new bugs being discovered.
We’ve had other statements about the Z anime having sped up pacing for 2016. Or the “Kalos Reserve” XY2 getting axed. So Zygarde is randomly shoehorned into some building in Alola instead of its native setting. Whole transition was a mess.
I can’t say what exactly happened, but it seems like Ohmori took over at a horrible time and has yet to recover.
