Which is even worse. Misty failing to win the heart of a guy she likes is one thing, but she can always move on and find new love. But getting suffocated then replaced by someone else to bond with one of the ancient gods of her universe? Now she's messed up what is likely the only chance she'd ever get her entire life. She will never fucking recover from this. It's over.
Misty was doomed from the start to remain a background character. Even worse, nobody cares. The only people who ever expected or thought she'd be anything more significant than a gym leader were anime fans.
