Agatha thinks it's a waste of his talent to spend all his time cooped up in a lab cataloging information, and not out in the field fighting strong opponents and improving. To Agatha the essence of Pokemon training is the pursuit of strength and victory. Knowledge and bonds with Pokemon are all a means to that end. Oak's philosophy is pretty much the opposite.
