I see copycat artists all the time, it's absolutely possible to mimic another style if you study the material and put the time in to learn how to replicate its ins and outs. I feel like you've been told that to try and dissuade you from copying, which I guess I can somewhat agree with-- finding your own style will make you stand out more.
