They can't replicate Cynthia's success today. Originally she was not a very involved character. She studies history and she has her family in Celestic Town. But otherwise she doesn't do that much during your travels. When it turns out that she's the strongest NPC in the game, it comes as a shock to new players who suddenly get stuck against a powerful team. Diantha is famous in XY, but she doesn't have a good team and the game is not well balanced. Leon is constantly shilled by the plot of SwSh, to the point where it even impedes on the player doing anything in the story. But like Charizard still dies to Rock moves, so he isn't that strong either. Geeta's team is just actively bad, using her spikes setter last, or using random weak mons like Avalugg.
It has to be a game at this point, they don't want Cynthia to be dethroned.
