>should be judged solely on [arbitrary category]That's a grossly deductive way of seeing things. Nobody denies Ogerpon is the central character of it but Teal Mask is also about Kieran and Carmine and the Loyal Three and Kitakami as a whole. It's a sum of its parts. Its main narrative theme is subversion. Every part of Teal Mask plays into this with the heroes becoming the villains and vice versa, the abrasive racist girl developing feelings for you, the nice shy kid going off the deep end and not getting a redemption until much later. Pecharunt fits right into this theming as well - only he does it in the opposite direction, as everyone was expecting him to be an evil mastermind, like

>Overall his backstory does nothing to enhance her story and may in fact work against itEven if we look at it in a vacuum like this I still disagree. People focus mostly on his relation with the Loyal Three which is understandable and gets no complaints from me but as a foil to Ogerpon he also plays the part perfectly from design to characterisation to personality. He improves Ogerpon's character because it makes her even more of a tragic character than she already is. She and her partner come in possession of these wondrous masks, made of precious crystals, that grant upon the wearer the power of the elements and allow them to change type. They become famous around the world. The story implies that it's only a matter of time until they get the wrong kind of attention except once they inevitably do it's not someone going after power, or riches, or fame. It's three glorified nannies and their sniveling little idiot of a protégé who cares not about any of these things and merely wants to make a gift out of them for his parents, and when she retaliates he can't even fight back.
