>Gen I: Giovanni has Team Rocket goons all over Kanto and TR will harass you from essentially Gym #4 to the very last one>Gen II: Some leftover Rocket shmucks are up to no good but really don't bug you a whole ton outside of the radio takeover and Lake of Rage>Gen III: The literal monster god of the Earth inflicts a nationwide drought and the monster god of the ocean inflicts a nationwide flood >Gen IV: Some evil guy >Gen V: Dennis is planning on taking over the world with a legendary dragon of folklore and also beats his son>Gen VI: GIANT FUCKING DEATH LASER>Gen VII: Batshit insane woman tries killing her daughter's legendary pet so she can live with alien monsters>Gen VIII: Some retard decides that he must stop something that'll happen in 100 years RIGHT NOW in the middle of a big fight so the 10 year old kid has to go grab a legendary sword dog to kick its assGen II has the most mellow story of the franchise by a pretty long shot and I definitely think it really helps in giving the game a "comfy" vibe. Every generation has some part of "the chosen one is you, the 10 year old kid!" as a part of it, but it definitely feels the most subdued in the first two gens which help make the games feel like an actual adventure with you and some friends instead of this predestined journey. I don't think they'll ever go back because they need the legendary merch $$$$, but I'd love to see a more chill story in a Pokemon game once again without any mandatory legendaries or super high stakes and instead a bigger focus on world building.
