Hello /vp/. Most of you probably won't believe this, but I wanted to share some important and cool information with you guys. You don't have to take this as fact, but I work for the brazilian localization team for gamefreak.
Malamar may not seem like much of a big deal now, but thanks to a new move called "Utilize", this thing is going to be a huge threat.
Basically, Utilize is a move that when used, allows the pokemon to instantly use their held item for a single use. The catch is that it can use human-made held items that it normally couldn't use, like full restores, full heals, ect.
For example:
Utilize a full restore to fully restore your health and stats
Utilize an escape rope to flee from a wild battle
Utilize a berry to eat it early
Utilize a focus band/sash to endure the next hit
While this may seem like a cool concept, the main reason why this move was given to Malamar was because of a brand new item, the Bug Spray.
Bug Spray is like the Air Balloon, only it doesn't pop and has to be used on your pokemon, not held. Using a bug spray on your pokemon keeps it immune to all bug type moves until the pokemon switches out or the battle ends. Normally in competitive battling, it would be impossible to active bug spray due to the no items rule. But with Malamar, you can Utilize a single use Bug Spray to receive complete immunity to Bug, its x4 weakness.
Its also getting Draco Meteor, Superpower, and of course, Pshyco Boost to go hand-in-hand with its Contrary ability.
Im not entirely sure on Malamar's stats, but expect high speed and a decent amount of bulk.
Once again, you don't have to believe any of this , but expect Malamar to be a huge threat.
