If I had to guess, most all pokemon are competitive by nature- they hardly ever shy away from a fight, so I'd buy that they were naturally designed to feud with each other, and so well built for battling that they seldom die.
I'm not denying that Pokemon is glorified dogfighting, I'm saying it's Dogfighting stripped of its negative outcomes: The Game.
