Your fingers are a good reference for a horse's front leg. Make your hand stand on two fingers, then bend your index finger up, it pretty much moves the same as a horse's leg.
Even if Pokemon/cartoons aren't realistic, knowing the base animal's anatomy greatly helps in the quality of the drawing.
