Time travel / dinosaur gimmick. Professor Eucalyptus of Pokémon’s Australia equivalent builds a time machine to go back and study ancient pokemon, and your ass is along for the ride.
See fossilmon in their original states, plus the ancestors of existing designs that will of course be powerwanked to hell. Add the ability to transform into more or less evolved forms of certain pokemon with some gimmick watch or something.
Add some plot points where Team Bruce or something hijacks the machine and starts using it to bring shit into the present, meaning you gotta both do the gym challenge and unfuck various areas that are now melded with their ancient/historical counterparts. We spend a ton of time trawling through ruins in various parts of pokemon, why not see them when they were at their peak?
Bam, kids love the Dinosaur stuff, can reuse old assets/locations to save money, and it’s not something that hasn’t been done before (see: platinum fucked around with this a bit).
