Pokemon is hit with this plague because it was so damn popular, and it's considered "classic". Same with other old games they probably played religiously but eventually forgot because they just grew up.
Problems arise when they're snobbish about it. And nearly every one of these kinds of people are obnoxious scene kids wanting to desperately to be different.
The shame of being in a long running franchise's fanbase...
