The first 4-5 chapters are different timelines where Ash winds up with a different girl but the Ultra Beasts start appearing throughout the world by the millions and start killing everyone in their path including Ash and whoever his lover is in that timeline. Eventually there's a convergence where one timeline's Nebby saves Ash before he dies thanks to divine (arceus) intervention and Ash gets sent back in time to before he was a Trainer so that he could prepare for the incoming invasion. Each time he fails to save the timeline he gets sent back to that point in time before he was a trainer essentially becoming Punished Ash, a man denied happiness.
Eventually he makes it to Ultra Megalopolis in between dimensions and works together with the Ultra Recon squad to stop the Ultra Beasts. The final timeline Ash falls in love with and gets together with Zossie.
