Special frustrates me a lot too, and I stopped reading after DPPt (which dragged, but I remember enjoying it at the time). But since I liked most of the protagonists up to that point, it helps me overlook the stuff I hate. Yet trying to make sense of the stupid plot definitely just pisses me off and makes me all negative about everything too.
Also, which English scans are you using? There are differences between the Chuang Yi and Viz Media versions if you weren't already aware, not to mention all the different fan scanlations.
