If I can, I find my specific Gardevoir that I've had for 14 years since Emerald and bring him back with me if he wants to come with me. If I can do that, the rest of the time would just be spent exploring for a bit before I had to return.
If I somehow knew it was impossible to get him, I'd catch something interesting in that time, I guess and take that home. Whatever seemed most likely to unique, fun to live with and actually managable IRL.
