When you have the tools and skills to develop a game, you should strive to make something unique instead of rehashing what GameFreak already does semi-annually and tweaking the difficulty. Give the people what they always wanted - an open world like what we saw in games like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, a story worth listening to, and actual characters you can care about. Instead of focusing on hundreds of fakemons that no one will remember, use real mons and do creative shit with them. Don't try to make your game "hardcore" - make it fun to explore instead, and surprise people. Expand beyond what GameFreak does, and see where inspiration takes you. I'm asking for a Horii tier masterpiece, I simply want something fresh.
There are examples of fan projects like that, like Crystal Clear. But they are few and far between, unfortunately.
