Hoenn is my favorite. When playing it on the GBA I thought the colors were so beautiful. Also, it's the only region not broken up by those checkpoint buildings which is amazing. There were so many interesting locations like Shoal Cave, the Abandoned Ship, route that was covered in ash. I don't think the ocean was too large and I actually loved exploring it. I remember surfing and diving with Swampert trying to find every last bit of treasure. Most routes in Pokemon are very linear and the horizontal piece of ocean in Hoenn is no exception but I remember the vertical piece actually giving the player a lot of free space. For the first time in a Pokemon game I felt like I could really explore the unknown.
It introduced many of my favorite Pokemon too.
