I’ve got to hand to Yonemura, he was able to honestly save his series’ issues with episode placement with his development of Project Mew.
This anime-original plot arc allows for Goh-focus episodes to be more intense/engaging, as opposed to random COTD(catch of the day) episodes.
The actual cadence of Ash/Goh/filler episodes hasn’t really changed(although Koharu is more often now), but instead of:
>pwc every five/ten episodes
>a couple of goh cotd episodes
>fillers sprinkled in
its now like:
>pwc every five/ten episodes
>one/two koharu episodes
>oneish cotd episode
>a couple of standard fillers
>directly in between the pwc episodes, a project mew trial mission of equal gravity to the pwc episode
This singular change has great broken the monotony of basically having one interesting/plot relevant episode every two months. Now, we have them every month or even faster than that. This is in large part the reason why PM feels much faster paced now.
The actual pacing of the plot hasn’t changed: even if Goh COTD episodes were boring, they were still generally important to his development. However, now that theres some actual stakes/structure attached, Gohs episodes have instantly become more interesting. Even people who don’t like Goh are looking forward to Project Mew to see more of the other characters, and to maybe see Ash pop off.
Yonemura, the guy in charge of Series Conposition is also the one whos been spearheading Project Mew. As something that has next to no basis in the games(aside from pogo missions), even if you don’t like it you have to admit that it was an objectively good idea.
What are your guys’ thoughts on this? Lets have some actual discussion for once
