One thing for me was deciding to make each Pokemon have only one ability instead of 2, since it makes it easier to balance the Pokemon knowing it can only have one ability, and a person searching for a rare Pokemon doesn't have to search for an ability they like on top of all that.
After doing that though, I decided to make pseudo hidden abilities and expand them, mainly because it's an easy way to add unique forms to Pokemon by having it check for a specific ability but also because I wanted to add more events and unique encounters without adding more legendaries. So then I tried looking for Pokemon from other sources for "unique" pokemon since I didn't want things to feel too uncannon, and while there are some easy ones like Spiky-eared Pichu, Crystal Onix, Spaceworld Girafarig, and Black Fog Haunter, there's surprisingly less than I expected. And a good chunk aren't fully evolved. So that was pretty disappointing.
