Bummed guys, I need inspiration.
Just failed my third attempt at a nuzlocke in a row, one of the easier in the series by all accounts, Pokemon Yellow.
I didnt grind at any point in the game, and always made sure my team was = to or less than the level of the upcoming gym leader.
Even going out of my way to break the linear path to challenge as many trainers and wild pokemon as I could as I completed areas, my team of 5 was vastly underleveled in the majority of fights post Celdadon Gym, with each of the gym leaders bringing 50+ pokemon, in a game where the champion himself only has one single level 60 pokemon.
I eventually lost my kadabra and snorlax on Giovanni's level 56 Rhydon, and then lost to the gary rematch, pre E4, due to my vastly neutured team with no trainers to grind on between the battles.
Is grinding inherently a requirement of the runs? With no deaths, no loss of optimized xp, I was facing pokemon 10 levels my senior along the main path.
If grinding is inherently part of the process that is these games, and you can simply grind your pokemon up to the level of the leaders you face, where is this challenge or suspense in these games?
I faced the exact same situiation in Gold/Silver, where facing every trainer with a core of 3 strong pokemon left me 5-7 levels lower than the steel gyms Steelix, who spammed a BP80 attack move in a game where I was lucky to see moves of NFE pokemon reaching past 50-60.
tl;dr, i'm salty, but if the games all almost require grinding, where does the challenge come in? I've blown about 60h in my sucessive attempts and i'm feeling pretty blown out atm.
