Frankly the GTS has always been unusable outside the first few weeks the game exists. Afterwards it's insane trade requests and hacked pokemon. And sure the GTS doesn't crash your shit anymore, but hacked pokemon are still easy to come by. Really the greatest technological advances have been in hackers making hacked pokemon pass much better now. Wonder trade is practically unusable in the games (you'll just get a shiny with it's name set to some market site), discord servers have bots to trade with you instantly, the GTS doesn't even let you trade Legendaries/Mythicals without being friends, and I dare you to go check Ebay listings for "Pokemon Switch game", you'll get listings to buy genned shiny pokemon, deposited directly into your Home account.
I don't even have much of a problem with hacking, but don't pretend this is some sort of "necessary evil" or having any positive benefits.
