The thing about gen 1 is that the designs were more natural looking. They weren't allergic to detail, it was just integrated in more sensible ways, and the bodies were more shapely. There was an animalistic quality to it. Excluding the outliers like mr mime of course.
I would probably try to make it more monstrous looking. Emphasize the digitigrade feet and maybe give it a hunch, or more of a hunting posture at any rate, and reintegrate the black with soft fur transitions rather than hard lines
