Everyone has dreams, flaws, aspiration, beliefs, shortcomings, motivations and ambition, and 'larger than life' characters are no different. If you have trouble characterizing one, imagine their humble beginnings and follow them until their endgame, and you'll usually come up with a good image on how such a character will carry themselves. We are, after all, the sum of our experiences, and great people are no different.
