Gen 3 had Deoxys and to a lesser extent castform, our first form swappers. Gen 4 officially added formes. Gen 5 showed off true fusion first with kyurem. Gen 6 had megas, further warming the fanbase up to pokemon changing forms mid battle. Gen 7 had alola forms and Necrozma. At this point pokemon can change forms in every way imaginable with the sole exception of fusion. It's only a matter of time.
