CLEARLY they're going to leave the school. This clearly starts at a school, you can see it in the background, you can see the female trainer leaving it. It's in the background of several panning shots right across the way from their home.
Maybe the reason they look so bland is BECAUSE they're going to shed those clothes and go on an adventure and they look so bland and dopey is to encourage the player to customize. Like after they get their Pokedex, they'll change into their 'canon' trainer outfit.
