There are still reasons to trade without version exclusives. Pokemon that trade by evolving, being limited in evolution stones/mega stones/evolution items, pokemon you have to choose between like eeveelutions/fossils/etc.
If they truly just wanted to encourage trading then why as well do they still keep just one save file? Because they know people will want to play again without losing all their shit so they just buy the other version. Hell as a kid my parents bought me all three versions of red/blue/yellow because neither of us knew that they were the same game. How is a parent buying for kids supposed to know that they are the same fucking game?
