Until Arven points the oddity out, the player has no reason to think the professor was misdirected by their obsession other than the Occulture magazine in their lab. But the fact it's an issue of a Pokemon you end up finding anyway could still lead some to believe "huh it was sensationalized but there might be some truth behind it."
The problem timefags can't comprehend is that Walking Wake / Iron Leaves in particular pointing out the imaginary sketch is the final nail in the coffin for them. Because in order to take Occulture seriously in their depictions of these things as ancient/future Pokemon, you also have to acknowledge that there are three missing entries prior to the ones you see in the prof's lab on Poco Path.
The raids you're pulling from were capable of being tackled way before any of this is critically examined. As far as anyone cares, it's just a case of the magazine being "sort of" right.
