From pewter you can go directly to celadon through a little forest. Or you have the option to just walk the mountainside up to the indigo plateau after completing your badges. Pewter city is now the final gym, Viridian's gym is the first.
after making it to celadon you get to saffron and from there you're free to roan wherever the fuck you want pretty much.
Cycling road is removed for better travel to viridian, there's a bridge leading straight to fuchsia from viridian much like what there used to be from lavender town and all the way to fuchsia in the old days. Just much shorter.
