This is not like the Bank, where you could use the app just 3 times during its entire lifespan (to transfer things from BW to XY, from XY to SM and from SM to Home) and be done with it. Home is something that every pokémon player will HAVE to have constant access to for several years.
And by ALL players, I mean ALL of them. Unlike Bank, this isn't something that affects only mainline series players. Home will also connect to GO, which is already bigger than the mainline series, and maybe even other spin-off games. And speaking of that, here's another key reason it's going to be free: the app is also going to be available on mobile devices. Do you really think they'd make a mobile app paid, instead of making it free-to-download and just stuffing it full of microtransactions, exponentially increasing their profits? It'd make no sense from a business standpoint and we all know GF prioritizes profit over everything else.
