Base Gen 5 has the best story of every other pokemon game, it felt actually decent for an RPG. After that there was literally nothing.
Remake gen 5 had a shitty sequel to the story, but way better gameplay and post game content.
Emerald was great for the Batlle Frontier, HG/SS was amazing because it had a fuckton of content AND the goodies of gen 4 like online services and quality of life improvements.
All it'd take to make Pokemon games better would be to KEEP THE GOOD STUFF like secret bases and battle frontier AND THEN ADDING NEW SHIT.
Gamefreak is inexcusable for not putting in the effort/resources to make this franchise an even bigger colossus and instead doing the bare minimum because "too big to fail"
