I thought the pokemon distribution was really good (except on the main water route, which was 70% tentacool), had a good amount of back tracking and gave you reasons to do it, and a plot that was important enough that I noticed it but it didn't take itself too seriously.
My one suggestion is to ignore the lucky egg. I went from being under levelled to over levelled after the 6th gym and I didn't realize. Aim to beat the elite 4 around level 55, since my Volc soloed one of the elite 4 at 61.
