Pokemon personalities and having them all outside of their Pokeballs made it feel like they were more then just tools used for battling.
Certain SoL/Filler episodes were fucking 10/10 that I wish future series would borrow from plot/tonally wise. The Treasure Island, Morelull and Passimian episodes for example are unironically 3 of SM's best episodes.
Characters having more importance then just one offs like 99% of the characters introduced in a series. Background characters became recurring characters and important people like Hala, Nanu, Olivia were more important then 95% of all the Gym Leaders introduced through the past 20 years. OC designs as well.
