Rabbits were introduced as a plentiful food source that would breed fast for mining towns. It only stands to reason that introducing rabbits for food would mean people bringing over whippets for catching them. Whippets were the working mans way of hunting rabbits, as whippets originate from non-noble breeders who were not allowed to breed large greyhounds due to the Forest Laws banning hunting to protect British forests, except for nobles who could afford the fee to hunt. The non-nobles thus bred the smaller, leftover runt greyhounds to produce a miniature greyhound that we now call the whippet. Whippets are common for Irish travellers to own because they can hunt rabbits for them.
