Thats impossible to do. Once they are in touch with who their true audience are is when the games will get better.
But right now their true audience like you rightly put are kids and that's what they seem to be aiming. They removed the battle frontier for that reason saying kids are on their phones more than Pokémon so they want to make it as easy to pick up and play as possible like a mobile game.
They might as well move to mobile at this point.
