The previous episode had Pikachu quick attack followed up by a thunderbolt where he jumps to the air and scrunches up (you know the pose from the stock footage). Then it ends with a stareoff. Pikachu with all 4 limbs on the ground ready to battle and Charizard. Then episode ends.
The one next episode was a different thunderbolt, even more dynamic with the flips. It's probably confusing because it started mid-scene after the previous episode recap so you thought it was the same attack in the previous episode. They were in mid-battle and we jump right into it.
It's a method they use so they don't have to animate so much of the fight because they're saving it for the Greninja fight. I paid a lot of attention to the episode because some choreography of that fight was great even if the conclusion made people angry. My favorite was the portrayal of a heavy vs light fighting style between Charizard and Greninja.
