The games don't need Ash. TPC doesn't need Ash. The merch doesn't need Ash. Pikachu is all that matters and Ash is just his tagalong in the great world of marketing. Meanwhile Goh is not only a better character but far more relatable to younger audiences than some 30 year old larping as a 10 year old. All Goh needs (or any potential protagonist for that matter) is to take on gym matches to promote the games. Ash is irrelevant.
