Kanto's open-endedness is let down a bit by so much of it being fields containing the same handful of Pokemon, but it does help spice up playthroughs and teambuilding. You can get Eevee, Snorlax, the Hitmons, the Super Rod, the Safari Zone, and Seafoam Islands not too far apart from each other depending on what you want. Obviously some of those things are more work than others and you won't know all of that on your first try, but its a decent starting point a better open-ended map. Always look forward to kicking Team Rocket out of Silph Co. too.
