I don’t think he’s the type to take your usual compliment well because I think he’s got that bit of self-doubt in the back of his mind. You can’t tell him the obvious things like he’s a great trainer or he’s attractive because he probably gets that a lot from fans (if gym leaders have those in Sinnoh?), so he just dismisses them as attention-seeking words or someone trying to suck up to him. He’d probably appreciate a heartfelt, well thought out sentiment from someone he’s close to though; maybe someone who understands the electrical work he’s done in his gym and throughout Sunyshore and can appreciate the innovation behind his designs. He wouldn’t outwardly show it but it’d give him a warm fuzzy inside.
As for feeding his ego, maybe roasting on Flint and pointing out all the ways he’s better him. There’s a lot to work with there lol. I can picture the smug little smirk when you tell him he’s hotter than Flint, or he’s the better trainer and deserves to be in the Elite Four.
