It's probably a region marker. The Kalos dex icon is close to a pentagon shape too. So even if stuff without the pentagon isn't allowed in tournaments/online battles, most of that could be resolved by breeding with Ditto.
I wonder what if the other regions would get unique symbols, or if there's only one other symbol just to signify that they aren't from Kalos.
