This is how I would have handled Alola school--
--1) Ash stays in a dorm, not in Kukui's house
--2) His roommate is Hau.
--3) Both of them meets and defend Lillie who gets criticize by other students due to her inability to touch pokemon.
--4) Ash and Hau will be troublemaker who often break school rules and drag Lillie along with them.
--5) Lana is also a classmate that joins them.
--6) Ash also meet another girl like Diana who happen to be a honer student who believe herself to be mille above Ash and annoyed by his optimistic personality that somehow attracts others student.
--7) Her jealousy gets even worst when Ash gets an Z ring from Tapu. She challenges Ash for a battle where she almost overwhelm him with her strategic battling style until Ash fought back and drove her to a corner. The battle ends in a draw.
--8) Mallow and Kiawe aren't classmate. Mallow is the waitress of a restaurant where Ash and Hau likes to eat while Kiawe is a delivery boy who often deliver various object to island to island.
-- 9) Team Skull are bunch of delinquent that hates the Alola school and often pick fight with the students. Ash and Diana even teams up to teach them a lesson.
