It's transferring from gen II that was cut, and not out of greed. It was PURELY thanks to technological limitations. Not only could they not make linking between GB/GBC and GBA work, but the actual Pokemon data was so different between gens II and III that actually translating it is literally impossible. Have you actually looked into how transferring from VC works? You're basically generating new data entirely using the old one as a template. It's possible for stats to change drastically thanks to the new IVs generated, not to mention EVs resetting entirely due to working in a totally different way.
